Physiotherapy helps people of all ages improve their physical movement and manage pain. Imagine you’ve hurt your back, had surgery, or maybe just have some nagging aches and pains – that’s where a physiotherapist comes in.

Physiotherapists are patient -centered healthcare providers that focus on assessment, treatment, and prevention of a variety of physical conditions and injuries. They work with you to understand your body’s ailments and create a personalized plan to help you feel better. This might include exercises to strengthen muscles, stretches to improve flexibility, and techniques to reduce pain. They also use special equipment and hands-on treatments to help you recover faster like manual therapy, manipulation, acupuncture, and trigger point needling.

Physiotherapy is a way to get back to doing the things you love, whether it’s playing with your kids, going for a run, or simply walking without discomfort. It’s all about helping you move better, feel stronger, and live a healthier life!

Chiropractors are extensively educated in the prevention, assessment, diagnosis and management of spine, muscle and nervous system (also known as musculoskeletal or MSK) conditions. They recommend a course of treatment to help relieve pain and improve function without surgery or pharmaceuticals such as manipulation, soft tissue therapy, exercise, modalities (ultrasound, laser, etc.), rehabilitation, and patient education. Chiropractors are also trained to provide nutritional counselling, as well as recommend injury prevention strategies.

Specific training in spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) allows chiropractors to provide adjustments using highly-skilled and precise movements to the vertebrae of the spine, correcting joint motion to restore proper movement and improve function.

Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine practice that works to balance the flow of Qi energy in the body. When healthy, the Qi travels along meridians over the body, but with injury or disease the flow is disrupted. Acupuncture works to treat both the root cause and the symptoms of injury, disability and disease. Acupuncture is both a safe and effective alternative way to relieve pain, improve mood/anxiety/depression, increase energy, and improve body functions. In physiotherapy acupuncture can be used to treat symptoms related to musculoskeletal injuries (sprain/strain), acute/chronic pain, stroke/neurological disorders, respiratory disease and allergies.

When used on chronic myofascial and nerve pain the needles can be used to treat stubborn facilitated muscle bands. With penetration of often deep muscles this treatment technique can create a deep muscle cramp or twitch which works to heal both the local muscle and the supplying nerve.

Laser Therapists are trained to use 3B Laser and LED beams of light that can stimulate the cells in the body to repair tissue, reduce inflammation and transmit pain. Light can stimulate or inhibit cellular function according to its intensity and the time applied. Lasers and LEDs produce intense beams of light at specific wavelengths. When the right wavelength at the right intensity is used at the correct anatomical location for the right amount of time you can stimulate repair, resolve inflammation and reduce pain.

PBT Laser Therapy can be used for a variety of issues like muscle pain, joint problems, and even wounds. It’s non-invasive, which means no needles or surgery – just the application of light. Sessions are usually quick and painless, and many people find it relaxing.

So, if you’re dealing with pain or a stubborn injury, PBT Laser Therapy might be a great option to help you feel better and get back to your normal activities faster. It’s a modern, high-tech way to support your body’s natural healing process!

Vestibular Rehabilitation is a specialized form of therapy that treats problems relating to vestibular disorders. Our therapists are trained to assess and treat basic vertigo, neurological vestibular loss, and motion sickness by using positioning techniques, acupuncture, habituation and gaze stabilization exercises.

In a vestibular rehab session, a therapist will work with you to create a personalized exercise plan. These exercises might include movements to improve your balance, eye exercises to help with focus, and activities to reduce dizziness. The goal is to help your brain adapt and learn to compensate for the issues with your inner ear.

Vestibular rehab is a way to regain your stability and confidence. It’s all about helping you move around safely and comfortably, whether you’re walking down the street, getting out of bed, or enjoying your favorite activities without feeling off-balance. It’s a targeted approach to help you feel steady and secure again!

Manual Therapy is a therapeutic technique applied to a joint with dysfunctional movement in order to restore a joint glide or movement. When applied with a low amplitude but high velocity thrust this is called a manipulation.

This can include massage to relax tight muscles, mobilization to gently move stiff joints, and stretching to improve flexibility. The goal is to reduce pain, increase movement, and improve overall function. Manipulation is a specific type of manual therapy. This is done to improve the joint’s range of motion, reduce pain, and help your body function more smoothly.

Manual therapy and manipulation is like having a customized, hands-on approach to address specific problems in your muscles and joints, helping you feel better and get you moving more freely. Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, recovering from an injury, or just need a tune-up, these techniques can be a great part of your treatment plan!

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy is a specialized branch of practice that involves education and empowering patients with pelvic health conditions such as incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and pelvic pain.

Imagine a place where there isn’t stigma attached to pelvic pain, bladder and bowel dysfunction and sexual function. Where you can discuss your concerns in a safe environment with an evidence-based approach to your health. Look no further!

Our assessments include an in-depth dialogue of your current concerns, health history, objective exam (internal and external) and followed by an individualized care plan with short and long-term goals. Your treatment will also look globally at breathing patterns, alignment, posture, spinal movement, pelvis mobility and strength and conditioning of your overall body (including your pelvic floor)!

Let’s connect you with the provider that is best suited to your needs! Browse our team bios and book online in the comfort of your own home or call our amazing front end staff who will help connect you with one of our team.

step one

book your initial consultation

We believe our treatments are only as good as our assessments so ours range from 60-90 minutes. This allows us to complete a full health history, clear any medical red flags, hear your concerns and goals, complete a full objective exam, educate you on your condition and provide an initial treatment.

step TWO

tell us all about your condition

Let’s collaborate together to set short and long term goals for your treatment sessions. Have a lofty goal? Or do you just want to tie your shoes pain free? No goal is too small to chase!

step Three

We create a treatment plan for you

At each treatment we will reassess your objective measures and check in with your symptoms. This allows us to change our treatment intensity to bring your goals to the next level.

step four

assess your progress and set new goals

We can’t promise a cake for your graduation day but know our team is rooting for you every step of the way! Small wins or big wins, each one is celebrated with your health care team. We ensure you leave the clinic with a toolbox of tips and tricks, so if you experience your symptoms again you are well equipped to handle them, or know when it’s time to pop in for a maintenance visit.

step five

Celebrate your wins and graduate!

How it works

I’ve had countless physiotherapy treatments in the past in locations other than Ladysmith. I am now in my late 80’s suffering from osteoporosis as well as fibromyalgia due to my having a chronic medical condition. Shayne’s treatment was almost immediately relieving. It was by far the best treatment I have ever received. He took great care to be not only thorough but careful and gentle too. He also gave me extremely useful advice and tips to help me to avoid future occurrence

"It was by far the best treatment I have ever received."

After years of chronic pain and ongoing appointments with a myriad of chiropractors, massage therapists, and physiotherapists, I was referred to Erika and the Vancouver Island Physiotherapy Clinic. Erika was immediately able to identify the sources of my pain, regardless of the complexity of the presenting issues and I quickly began to feel relief. After a few sessions I am now virtually pain free which is the first time in over ten years. I am extremely thankful to have found her.
- L.S.

"After a few sessions, I am now officially pain free."

Sarah is one of the most comprehensive and knowledgeable physiotherapists I have seen. My needs were clearly heard, the treatment was phenomenal, and I am able to resume all my life’s activities pain-free! Thank you Sarah!
